Why Nasal Polyp Surgery Is Needed

This surgery is performed when nasal polyps, soft noncancerous growths in the lining of the nose and sinuses, grow large enough to block the nasal passages or sinus drainage and do not shrink adequately with nasal steroid sprays or oral medications. Common underlying triggers include chronic sinusitis, allergies, asthma, and aspirin sensitivity, which can also make polyps prone to recurrence.

Signs You May Need Nasal Polyp Surgery

Patients typically experience persistent nasal congestion, reduced or lost sense of smell, postnasal drip, facial pressure or pain, and frequent sinus infections. Difficulty breathing through the nose, snoring, and a nasal-sounding voice are also common as the polyps enlarge and obstruct airflow.

Types of Nasal Polyp Surgery

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is the standard approach, using a thin endoscope through the nostrils to remove polyps and open blocked sinus passages without any external incision. Balloon sinuplasty, a less invasive adjunct technique, uses a small balloon to widen sinus openings, and is sometimes combined with polyp removal for milder cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do nasal polyps come back after surgery?

Yes, polyps can recur, particularly in patients with underlying allergies, asthma, or aspirin sensitivity, so continued use of nasal steroid sprays after surgery is usually recommended to reduce this risk.

Is nasal polyp surgery painful?

Most patients experience only mild discomfort, congestion, and some drainage for a week or two after surgery, which is generally well managed with prescribed medications and saline rinses.

How long is the recovery period?

Initial recovery takes about two weeks, though full healing of the sinus lining and improvement in smell can take several more weeks, with follow-up cleaning visits often scheduled with your ENT surgeon.

Will my sense of smell return after surgery?

Many patients notice improved smell within weeks as the obstruction is cleared, though the extent of recovery depends on how long smell was affected and any underlying nerve damage.

Are there non-surgical treatments to try first?

Nasal corticosteroid sprays, oral steroids, and treating underlying allergies or sinusitis are typically tried first, with surgery reserved for polyps that persist or significantly affect breathing despite these treatments.
