Why Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) Is Needed

This procedure is specifically indicated for chronic sinusitis or recurrent sinus infections that persist despite adequate courses of antibiotics and nasal steroids, and for nasal polyps that physically block sinus drainage pathways. It's typically recommended after imaging (CT scan) confirms the extent of blocked sinuses and correlates with the patient's ongoing symptoms.

Signs You May Need Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)

Patients typically report recurring sinus infections (three or more per year), persistent nasal blockage, colored nasal discharge, facial pain or pressure, and a reduced or lost sense of smell that hasn't improved with medical treatment. Snoring, mouth breathing, and disrupted sleep from nasal obstruction due to polyps are also common triggers for surgical referral.

Types of Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)

The standard technique removes polyps and opens narrowed sinus drainage pathways using an endoscope and specialized micro-instruments, tailored to which sinuses (maxillary, ethmoid, frontal, or sphenoid) are affected. In cases with extensive polyps or scarring from previous surgery, surgeons may combine FESS with balloon dilation of the sinus openings for a more thorough, lasting result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my nasal polyps come back after FESS?

Polyps can recur, especially in patients with underlying allergic or inflammatory conditions, so many patients continue nasal steroid sprays and regular ENT follow-up after surgery to reduce this risk.

How soon will I notice improved breathing after FESS?

Many patients notice easier breathing within one to two weeks as swelling reduces, though full benefit including smell recovery can take several weeks to a couple of months.

Is FESS a permanent fix for chronic sinusitis?

FESS significantly improves symptoms for most patients (around 88% success), but chronic sinusitis is often a long-term condition that benefits from continued medical management alongside the surgical results.

What's recovery like after FESS?

Expect mild nasal congestion, some discharge, and the need for saline rinses for a couple of weeks, with most people returning to work within about a week.

Is FESS safe?

FESS is generally very safe when performed by an experienced ENT surgeon, though as with any sinus surgery there are small risks of bleeding or, rarely, injury to structures near the sinuses; discussing your specific anatomy and CT findings with your surgeon beforehand helps ensure safety.
