Pyloroplasty widens the pylorus, the muscular valve between the stomach and small intestine, when it becomes too narrow or obstructed, often due to scarring from chronic peptic ulcer disease, or as part of managing delayed stomach emptying (gastroparesis) that has not responded to medications or dietary changes. It is also sometimes performed alongside other surgeries, like a vagotomy, to help the stomach empty properly afterward.

Signs You May Need Pyloroplasty

Common symptoms include persistent nausea and vomiting, especially of undigested food, a feeling of fullness after small meals, bloating, and unintentional weight loss due to poor stomach emptying. Severe or long-standing obstruction can also cause abdominal pain and dehydration from repeated vomiting.

Types of Pyloroplasty

The Heineke-Mikulicz technique makes a longitudinal incision across the pylorus and closes it transversely to widen the opening, and is the most commonly used approach. The Finney technique creates a wider connection between the stomach and duodenum for more severe narrowing, and both can be performed through open surgery or laparoscopically depending on the surgeon's approach and the patient's overall condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is pyloroplasty a major surgery?

It is a moderate abdominal procedure, often performed laparoscopically today, with most patients recovering steadily over a few weeks, though the exact experience depends on whether it is combined with other surgeries.

How soon can I eat normally after pyloroplasty?

You will typically start with liquids and gradually progress to solid foods over several days as your surgical team monitors how well your stomach is emptying and tolerating food.

What conditions typically require pyloroplasty?

It is most often needed for scarring from long-standing peptic ulcers or as part of treatment for gastroparesis, a condition where the stomach empties too slowly due to nerve or muscle dysfunction.

Will my digestion be normal after this surgery?

Most patients see significant improvement in stomach emptying and reduced nausea and vomiting, though some dietary adjustments, like smaller and more frequent meals, may be recommended during recovery.

What are the risks of pyloroplasty?

Risks include leakage at the surgical site, dumping syndrome (rapid stomach emptying causing symptoms after eating), and infection, which your surgeon will discuss based on your specific health and the reason for surgery.
