Lung transplant is considered for end-stage lung disease that no longer responds to medical treatment, most commonly severe COPD/emphysema, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, or pulmonary hypertension. It becomes necessary once the lungs can no longer provide adequate oxygen exchange to sustain daily activities despite maximum medical therapy.

Signs You May Need Lung Transplant

Patients typically experience severe, progressive breathlessness even at rest, chronic low oxygen levels requiring supplemental oxygen, frequent lung infections or exacerbations, and significant limitation in daily activities. Bluish discoloration of lips or fingertips and marked fatigue signal advanced respiratory failure warranting transplant evaluation.

Types of Lung Transplant

Single lung transplant replaces one diseased lung and is often used for conditions like pulmonary fibrosis, while bilateral (double) lung transplant replaces both lungs and is generally preferred for infectious conditions like cystic fibrosis to avoid leaving a diseased lung in place. Heart-lung transplant, though rare, is performed when severe heart disease accompanies end-stage lung failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the wait for a lung transplant?

Wait times depend on blood type, body size matching, disease severity, and donor lung availability in your region, and your transplant team will keep you informed through the evaluation and waiting process.

What is life like after a lung transplant?

Most recipients experience a significant improvement in breathing and quality of life, though lifelong immunosuppressive medication and regular monitoring for rejection or infection are required.

How long do transplanted lungs typically last?

Lung transplants generally have a somewhat shorter average survival than other organ transplants due to higher rejection risk, though many patients live for many good-quality years, and your team can discuss realistic expectations for your condition.

What are the biggest risks after lung transplant?

Organ rejection and infection are the main concerns due to lifelong immunosuppression, which is why close, regular follow-up with your transplant pulmonology team is essential.

Can both lungs be replaced at once safely?

Yes, bilateral lung transplant is a well-established procedure and is often preferred for certain conditions, though it is a longer, more complex surgery than single lung transplant, as your surgeon will explain.
