Why Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Is Needed

FESS is recommended for chronic sinusitis unresponsive to medical therapy, nasal polyps obstructing sinus drainage, or recurrent sinus infections caused by structural blockages. It's also used to address complications of sinus disease, such as mucoceles or, rarely, to access the skull base for certain tumors.

Signs You May Need Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Long-standing nasal blockage, thick discolored discharge, facial pressure or pain, reduced sense of smell, and frequent sinus infections lasting more than 12 weeks despite treatment are the key warning signs. Post-nasal drip, chronic cough related to sinus drainage, and headaches localized around the sinuses are also common indicators for surgical evaluation.

Types of Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

The core technique uses a rigid endoscope with a camera passed through the nostrils, paired with fine instruments to remove diseased tissue, polyps, and open blocked sinus pathways, all without external incisions. Image-guided (computer-navigation-assisted) FESS is used for more complex or revision cases to improve precision and safety near critical structures like the eye and brain.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is FESS different from traditional sinus surgery?

FESS is done entirely through the nostrils using an endoscope, avoiding external incisions and facial scarring that older open sinus surgery techniques required, and generally allows faster recovery.

How long is recovery after FESS?

Most patients return to normal activities within one to two weeks, though complete healing of the sinus lining and full symptom relief can take two to four weeks.

Will I need nasal sprays after sinus surgery?

Yes, saline rinses and sometimes steroid nasal sprays are typically recommended for weeks to months after surgery to support healing and reduce the chance of polyps or inflammation returning.

What are the risks of FESS?

Risks are generally low but can include bleeding, infection, and rarely injury to nearby structures like the eye socket or the base of the skull, which is why experienced ENT surgeons take extra precision near these areas.

Can sinus symptoms return after FESS?

Yes, particularly in patients with polyps or significant allergies, so ongoing medical management alongside surgery, and regular ENT follow-up, helps maintain long-term results.
