Gastrectomy is performed mainly for stomach cancer, to remove the tumor along with surrounding tissue and lymph nodes, and less commonly for severe peptic ulcers that cause uncontrollable bleeding, perforation, or don't heal despite medication. It may also be used for certain severe cases of gastric bleeding or perforation from other underlying stomach diseases.

Signs You May Need Gastrectomy

Warning signs include persistent upper abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, difficulty eating or early fullness after small meals, vomiting blood, or passing black, tarry stools indicating bleeding. Persistent indigestion or a lump in the abdomen that doesn't resolve with standard ulcer treatment should prompt further evaluation.

Types of Gastrectomy

Partial (subtotal) gastrectomy removes the diseased portion of the stomach while preserving the remainder, often used for tumors in a specific region or complicated ulcers. Total gastrectomy removes the entire stomach, typically for more extensive or higher-located cancers, requiring the surgeon to connect the esophagus directly to the small intestine, and both can be performed via open or minimally invasive (laparoscopic/robotic) techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be able to eat normally after gastrectomy?

Eating habits do change permanently — smaller, more frequent meals are needed, especially after total gastrectomy, and a dietitian typically helps guide this adjustment over the following months.

How long is the hospital stay after gastrectomy?

Hospital stay is typically seven to fourteen days given the complexity of the surgery and need to ensure the new digestive connections are healing well.

What is life like after total gastrectomy?

Most people adapt well over time with dietary changes and sometimes vitamin B12 supplementation (since the stomach helps absorb it), and regular follow-up with your surgical team helps manage this transition.

What are the risks of gastrectomy?

Risks include leakage at the surgical connection, infection, and long-term nutritional deficiencies, which is why post-surgical monitoring and dietary guidance are an important part of recovery.

Is gastrectomy the only option for stomach cancer?

Treatment depends on the cancer's stage — early cancers may sometimes be treated endoscopically, while more advanced disease may need gastrectomy combined with chemotherapy; your oncologist and surgeon will determine the best approach for your specific case.
