Lobectomy of the lung is performed primarily for lung cancer confined to one lobe, as well as for severe localized infections like tuberculosis or fungal disease, bronchiectasis, or benign tumors that are too large or symptomatic for smaller resections. Removing the entire affected lobe helps ensure clear surgical margins around a tumor while preserving as much healthy lung tissue as possible.

Signs You May Need Lobectomy

Common warning signs include a persistent or worsening cough, coughing up blood, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, and recurrent pneumonia in the same area of the lung. Shortness of breath and fatigue may also develop, especially as an underlying tumor or infection grows large enough to affect lung function.

Types of Lobectomy

Open lobectomy through a thoracotomy incision between the ribs is the traditional approach, offering direct access for complex cases. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomy uses small incisions and a camera for less pain and faster recovery, and robotic-assisted lobectomy offers similar minimally invasive benefits with enhanced surgical precision for appropriately selected patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be able to breathe normally with one lobe removed?

Most people adapt well since the remaining lung tissue compensates over time, though some reduction in exercise capacity is possible, particularly if lung function was already limited before surgery.

How long is recovery after lobectomy?

Hospital stay is typically five to seven days, with most patients returning to normal activities within four to eight weeks, faster with minimally invasive VATS or robotic approaches.

Is minimally invasive lobectomy as effective as open surgery?

For appropriately selected patients, VATS and robotic lobectomy achieve similar cancer outcomes to open surgery while offering less pain and quicker recovery, though your surgeon will determine the best approach for your case.

What are the risks of lung lobectomy?

Risks include air leaks, pneumonia, bleeding, and reduced lung function, which your thoracic surgeon will weigh against the benefits based on your overall lung health and the extent of disease.

Will I need additional cancer treatment after lobectomy?

Depending on the cancer stage and pathology results, chemotherapy or other adjuvant treatments may be recommended afterward, which your oncology team will discuss based on your specific findings.
