Tympanoplasty is performed to repair a perforated eardrum caused by chronic ear infections, trauma such as a direct blow or a cotton swab injury, sudden pressure changes such as from diving or an explosion, or a hole that hasn't healed on its own after an infection.

Signs You May Need Tympanoplasty

Warning signs include hearing loss, recurrent ear infections or drainage from the ear, ringing in the ear (tinnitus), and occasionally a feeling of fullness or discomfort in the affected ear, all pointing to a persistent hole in the eardrum.

Types of Tympanoplasty

Techniques include underlay and overlay grafting, where tissue, often taken from the patient's own temporalis muscle fascia, is placed beneath or over the perforation to seal it, and in more complex cases, the procedure may be combined with ossiculoplasty to repair or reconstruct the small hearing bones behind the eardrum if they've been damaged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this surgery restore my hearing?

Most patients experience significant improvement in hearing once the perforation is sealed and healed, though the exact improvement depends on the extent of damage to the eardrum and middle ear structures.

How long until the perforation heals?

The graft typically integrates and heals over 6-8 weeks, though hearing improvement is usually assessed and stabilizes by around 3 months.

Can a perforated eardrum heal without surgery?

Many small perforations heal on their own within weeks; surgery is generally recommended for larger perforations or ones that haven't healed after a few months.

Is the surgery done through an external incision?

Most tympanoplasties are done entirely through the ear canal or with a small incision behind the ear, without a visible external scar on the face.

What precautions are needed after surgery?

Keeping the ear dry and avoiding activities like swimming or blowing your nose forcefully for several weeks helps protect the healing graft.
