Liver resection is performed to remove liver tumors, whether cancerous or benign, large or symptomatic liver cysts, damaged tissue from trauma, or a portion of liver for living-donor transplantation. It is considered when the diseased or injured segment is confined enough that the remaining liver can be safely left behind to perform normal function.

Signs You May Need Liver Resection

Patients may experience upper abdominal pain or a palpable mass, unexplained weight loss, jaundice, or abnormal liver function tests found incidentally during evaluation for other conditions. In benign cases like large cysts or adenomas, symptoms of pressure, bloating, or discomfort from the growing mass often prompt the decision for resection.

Types of Liver Resection

Minor resection removes a small segment or wedge of liver tissue, while major hepatectomy removes an entire lobe (half) of the liver, chosen based on the size and location of the disease relative to the liver's blood supply. Both can be performed through open surgery or, increasingly, laparoscopically or robotically in suitable cases for smaller incisions and faster recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much of the liver can be safely removed?

Up to about 70-75% of a healthy liver can be removed because the liver regenerates significantly within weeks, though the safe limit depends on the patient's underlying liver health, which is carefully assessed beforehand.

Does the liver really grow back?

Yes, the liver has a unique capacity to regenerate its volume and function over the following weeks to months, making resection surgery viable even when a large portion is removed.

What is the hospital stay and recovery time?

Hospital stay is typically seven to ten days, with most patients returning to normal daily activities within six to eight weeks as the liver heals and regrows.

Is liver resection a high-risk surgery?

It is a major operation with real risks including bleeding, bile leaks, and liver dysfunction, but success rates are good in centers experienced with hepatobiliary surgery and careful patient selection.

Will I need a special diet after liver resection?

A balanced, easily digestible diet is recommended initially, avoiding alcohol and excess fat while the liver regenerates, and your surgical team will provide specific dietary guidance during recovery.
