Thyroid surgery is performed for a range of conditions including thyroid cancer, large or multinodular goiters causing compression symptoms, hyperthyroidism such as Graves' disease not controlled by medication or radioactive iodine, and suspicious nodules that can't be definitively diagnosed without removal.

Signs You May Need Thyroid Surgery

Warning signs include a visible or palpable neck swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing from gland enlargement, hoarseness, and symptoms of hormone imbalance such as rapid heartbeat, weight changes, tremors, or excessive fatigue depending on whether the thyroid is overactive or underactive.

Types of Thyroid Surgery

Procedures range from a lobectomy, removing half the gland for isolated nodules, to a subtotal or total thyroidectomy for larger goiters, cancer, or uncontrolled hyperthyroidism; minimally invasive and endoscopic thyroidectomy techniques are also available in select cases for smaller glands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need medication after thyroid surgery?

If most or all of the thyroid is removed, you'll need daily thyroid hormone replacement, which is straightforward to manage with regular blood tests.

What are the main risks?

Key risks include temporary or rare permanent voice changes and low calcium levels from effects on nearby nerves and parathyroid glands, both of which experienced surgeons work to avoid.

How is the type of surgery decided?

This depends on the underlying condition — cancer or Graves' disease typically needs the whole gland removed, while a single benign nodule may only need partial removal.

How long is the hospital stay?

Typically 1-3 days, depending on the extent of surgery and any monitoring needed for calcium levels.

Will there be a visible scar?

A small scar in a natural neck crease is typical, which usually fades significantly over several months.
