Mastectomy is performed to treat breast cancer that is too large or widespread within the breast for breast-conserving lumpectomy, involves multiple areas of the breast, or has recurred after previous lumpectomy and radiation. It is also chosen preventively by women at very high genetic risk of breast cancer, such as those carrying BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations, or by patient preference over breast conservation.

Signs You May Need Mastectomy

Warning signs prompting evaluation include a new breast lump, skin dimpling or thickening, nipple retraction or discharge, changes in breast size or shape, and persistent breast pain, though many cancers are first found on a screening mammogram before symptoms appear. In inflammatory breast cancer, rapid redness, warmth, and swelling of the breast can signal a more aggressive disease needing prompt treatment.

Types of Mastectomy

Simple (total) mastectomy removes all breast tissue but spares the lymph nodes, while modified radical mastectomy also removes underarm lymph nodes for cancer staging and treatment. Skin-sparing and nipple-sparing mastectomy preserve more of the natural breast skin envelope for immediate reconstruction, and double mastectomy removes both breasts, often chosen for bilateral cancer or high genetic risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need reconstruction after mastectomy?

Breast reconstruction is optional and can be done immediately during the same surgery or delayed until after other cancer treatments, using implants or your own tissue, based on your preference and your surgeon's advice.

Is mastectomy more effective than lumpectomy?

For most early-stage cancers, survival rates are similar between mastectomy and lumpectomy with radiation, so the choice often depends on tumor size, location, and personal preference rather than survival benefit alone.

How long is recovery after mastectomy?

Most women return to light activities within two to four weeks, with full recovery, especially if combined with reconstruction, taking four to six weeks or longer.

Will I need chemotherapy or radiation after mastectomy?

This depends on the cancer stage, lymph node involvement, and tumor characteristics found on pathology, and your oncology team will create a personalized treatment plan based on these results.

Is preventive mastectomy right for me if I have a family history?

Genetic counseling and risk assessment can help determine if preventive mastectomy is appropriate for your specific risk level, and this decision is best made together with a breast specialist and genetic counselor.
