Performed when a limb is no longer viable or is life-threatening to keep, most commonly due to severe peripheral vascular disease with critical limb ischemia, uncontrolled diabetic infection or gangrene, severe trauma, cancer within the bone or soft tissue, or overwhelming infection that doesn't respond to other treatment. It is generally considered a last resort after other limb-salvage options have failed or aren't feasible.

Signs You May Need Amputations

Warning signs include non-healing ulcers or wounds, blackened or dead tissue, severe unrelenting pain, foul-smelling discharge, spreading infection with fever, or complete loss of blood flow to the limb. Numbness, coldness, and progressive tissue death in a diabetic foot are common precursors.

Types of Amputations

Amputation level is chosen based on how much tissue can be saved while removing all diseased tissue, ranging from below-knee and above-knee for lower limbs to below-elbow and above-elbow for upper limbs, as well as partial foot or hand amputations. A staged emergency (guillotine) amputation is used for severe infection, followed by a definitive closure amputation once infection is controlled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be able to walk again after a leg amputation?

Many patients regain mobility with a prosthetic limb and rehabilitation, especially with below-knee amputations, though outcomes depend on overall health and fitness.

How is phantom limb pain managed?

It's common and managed with medications, physical therapy, mirror therapy, and sometimes nerve-focused treatments; discuss persistent pain with your surgeon or pain specialist.

When can a prosthetic limb be fitted?

Once the wound has healed and swelling has settled, usually a few weeks to a couple of months after surgery, a prosthetist can begin fitting.

Is amputation always permanent and irreversible?

Yes, so it's only recommended after limb-salvage options like bypass surgery or aggressive wound care have been genuinely exhausted.

What kind of rehabilitation is needed?

Physical therapy, strength training, and prosthetic training are essential and typically continue for several months to maximize independence.
