Why Lymph Node Dissection Is Needed

This surgery is performed to remove lymph nodes that are confirmed or suspected to contain cancer cells, most commonly as part of treatment for breast cancer, melanoma, or other solid tumors where cancer can spread through the lymphatic system. It helps both to treat cancer that has already spread to nodes and to accurately stage how far the disease has progressed.

Signs You May Need Lymph Node Dissection

Patients may notice a swollen, firm, or enlarged lymph node under the arm, in the neck, or in the groin that does not go away, sometimes alongside symptoms from the primary tumor such as a breast lump or an unusual mole. Often, node involvement is first detected through imaging or a sentinel lymph node biopsy performed during cancer staging rather than through symptoms alone.

Types of Lymph Node Dissection

Sentinel lymph node biopsy removes only the first one or two nodes that drain the tumor site to check for spread, while complete (radical) lymph node dissection removes a larger group of nodes in a region such as the axilla, neck, or groin when cancer is confirmed in the sentinel nodes or is more extensive. The extent of dissection is tailored to the cancer type, location, and stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will lymph node removal cause swelling in my arm or leg?

Yes, there is a risk of lymphedema, a chronic swelling from disrupted lymphatic drainage, particularly after more extensive dissections, and your medical team will guide preventive exercises and monitoring.

Why not just remove all lymph nodes to be safe?

Removing more nodes than necessary increases the risk of complications like lymphedema without added benefit, which is why sentinel node biopsy is used first to guide how extensive the dissection truly needs to be.

How is lymph node dissection recovery different from the main cancer surgery?

Recovery time adds to the primary surgery's timeline, generally two to six weeks, with specific attention to wound drainage and arm or leg mobility exercises to reduce swelling risk.

Will I need additional treatment after lymph node dissection?

If cancer is found in the removed nodes, your oncology team will likely recommend additional treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation to address any remaining microscopic disease.

Can lymphedema be treated if it develops?

Yes, compression garments, specialized massage techniques, and physiotherapy can effectively manage lymphedema, and early intervention with a lymphedema specialist gives the best results.
