Thyroidectomy is performed for thyroid cancer, large goiters causing pressure symptoms in the neck, hyperthyroidism unresponsive to medical management, or thyroid nodules that are indeterminate or suspicious on biopsy and need to be removed for definitive diagnosis.

Signs You May Need Thyroidectomy

Warning signs prompting evaluation include a growing neck lump, difficulty swallowing or a choking sensation, voice changes, and symptoms related to thyroid hormone imbalance such as unexplained weight change, palpitations, heat or cold intolerance, and fatigue.

Types of Thyroidectomy

The procedure can be a partial (lobectomy) thyroidectomy, removing only the affected lobe, or a total thyroidectomy, removing the entire gland; the extent chosen depends on whether the condition is benign, cancerous, or causing systemic hormone problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is thyroidectomy a major surgery?

It's a well-established, generally safe procedure performed routinely by endocrine and ENT surgeons, typically taking 2-4 hours with a short hospital stay.

Will I need lifelong medication?

Only if the entire gland is removed — a lobectomy patient may retain normal thyroid function, while total thyroidectomy always requires daily hormone replacement.

What are the possible complications?

Possible but uncommon complications include voice changes from nerve involvement and temporary low calcium from parathyroid gland disturbance — both are carefully monitored after surgery.

How soon can I return to normal activities?

Most people return to light activities within a week and normal routines within 2-4 weeks.

Will the scar be visible?

The incision is placed in a natural neck crease and typically fades to a thin, faint line over time.
