Trabeculectomy is performed for glaucoma, specifically when elevated eye pressure from blocked or reduced fluid drainage inside the eye isn't controlled by eye drops, laser treatment, or oral medications, and continues to threaten the optic nerve and vision.

Signs You May Need Trabeculectomy

Glaucoma often has no early symptoms, which is why regular eye pressure checks matter, but warning signs in more advanced cases include gradual peripheral (side) vision loss, eye pain or redness, halos around lights, and in acute angle-closure glaucoma, sudden severe eye pain, headache, and blurred vision requiring emergency treatment.

Types of Trabeculectomy

Trabeculectomy creates a new drainage channel using the eye's own tissue, and is often supplemented with an anti-scarring medication, such as mitomycin-C, applied during surgery to keep the new channel open longer; alternatives or additions include glaucoma drainage device (tube shunt) implants for more complex or previously failed cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this cure my glaucoma?

Trabeculectomy doesn't reverse existing vision loss but effectively lowers eye pressure to prevent further optic nerve damage, which is the main goal of glaucoma treatment.

Will I still need eye drops after surgery?

Some patients can reduce or stop drops after successful surgery, while others still need medication to keep pressure fully controlled — this varies by individual.

How long is the recovery?

Recovery typically takes 4-6 weeks, with frequent follow-up visits early on to check the eye pressure and drainage function.

Can the drainage channel close up over time?

Yes, scarring can sometimes narrow or close the new channel, which is why anti-scarring medication is used and why regular monitoring is needed even after successful surgery.

What are the risks?

Risks include infection, excessively low eye pressure (hypotony), bleeding, and cataract formation, which is why ongoing follow-up with your ophthalmologist is important.
