Why Mandibular Surgery Is Needed

Mandibular surgery is performed for jaw fractures from trauma or accidents, benign or malignant tumors and cysts within the jawbone, severe misalignment (malocclusion) affecting bite and facial symmetry, or congenital jaw deformities. It is also used to treat chronic jaw infections or osteomyelitis that has not responded to antibiotics alone.

Signs You May Need Mandibular Surgery

Warning signs include jaw pain or swelling, visible facial asymmetry, difficulty chewing or opening the mouth fully, an abnormal bite where teeth do not meet properly, and numbness in the lip or chin from nerve involvement. Trauma cases present with sudden severe pain, visible deformity, and inability to close the mouth normally after an injury.

Types of Mandibular Surgery

Open reduction and internal fixation uses plates and screws to realign and stabilize fractured jaw segments, while orthognathic surgery repositions the jawbone to correct severe bite and alignment problems, often planned with a dental orthodontist. Resection surgery removes tumors or cysts along with affected bone, sometimes requiring reconstruction with bone grafts to restore jaw shape and function.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does jaw surgery recovery take?

Initial healing takes about two to four weeks with a soft diet, but full bone healing and return to normal chewing function can take six to twelve weeks depending on the extent of surgery.

Will my jaw look different after surgery?

For corrective (orthognathic) surgery, a change in jaw shape and facial balance is the intended outcome, while for fracture repair the goal is restoring your normal pre-injury appearance as closely as possible.

Will I need braces along with jaw surgery?

Corrective jaw surgery for bite problems is usually combined with orthodontic treatment before and after surgery to achieve the best functional and aesthetic alignment of your teeth.

Is mandibular surgery painful?

You will have swelling and discomfort managed with pain medication, and most patients find the pain manageable and improving steadily over the first one to two weeks after surgery.

Can nerve damage happen during jaw surgery?

There is a small risk of temporary or, rarely, permanent numbness in the lip or chin due to the nerve's proximity to the jawbone, which your maxillofacial surgeon will discuss based on your specific case.
