Parotidectomy is performed to remove tumors, most commonly benign growths like pleomorphic adenomas but also malignant tumors, arising in the parotid salivary gland located near the ear and jaw. It is also used for recurrent parotid gland infections or stones blocking the salivary duct that do not resolve with conservative treatment.

Signs You May Need Parotidectomy

The typical warning sign is a slow-growing, painless lump in front of or below the ear, though rapid growth, pain, facial nerve weakness, or skin fixation to the lump raises concern for a malignant tumor. Recurrent swelling and pain, especially around meals, can indicate a duct stone or chronic infection needing surgical evaluation.

Types of Parotidectomy

Superficial parotidectomy removes only the outer portion of the gland, sufficient for most benign tumors, while carefully preserving the facial nerve that runs through this area. Total (or near-total) parotidectomy removes the entire gland, including the deeper lobe, typically required for malignant tumors or deeply located growths, sometimes combined with facial nerve reconstruction if the nerve is involved by cancer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will parotidectomy affect my facial movement?

The facial nerve runs directly through the parotid gland, so surgeons take great care to identify and preserve it during surgery, though temporary weakness is possible and permanent injury is uncommon in experienced hands.

Is the tumor usually cancerous?

Most parotid gland tumors are benign, but a biopsy or the surgical specimen itself confirms the diagnosis, and your surgeon will discuss the specific findings and any need for further treatment.

How long is recovery after parotidectomy?

Most patients go home within two to three days and return to normal activities within three to four weeks, with facial nerve function, if temporarily affected, typically improving over subsequent weeks to months.

What is Frey's syndrome and is it common after this surgery?

Frey's syndrome, sweating on the cheek while eating, can occur in some patients as nerves heal after parotid surgery, and while it is a known possibility, it is manageable and your surgeon can discuss treatment options if it develops.

Will I need radiation after parotidectomy?

This depends on whether the tumor is malignant and its specific characteristics on pathology; your surgeon and oncologist will determine if additional treatment is needed based on these results.
