Thoracoplasty is performed for chronic tuberculosis-related lung cavities or empyema (pus in the pleural space) that haven't healed with medical treatment, to collapse and obliterate infected space in the chest when the underlying lung cannot re-expand to fill it. It's far less common today due to effective antibiotics but is still used in specific complex chronic infection cases.

Signs You May Need Thoracoplasty

Warning signs include chronic cough, persistent chest pain, recurrent fevers from ongoing infection, weight loss, and a chest X-ray or CT showing a persistent air- or fluid-filled space in the chest that hasn't resolved despite prolonged antibiotic or antitubercular therapy.

Types of Thoracoplasty

Techniques range from classic multi-rib thoracoplasty, removing several rib segments to collapse the chest wall onto the diseased area, to more limited, modern modifications combined with muscle flap transposition to fill the residual space with healthy tissue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is thoracoplasty still commonly performed today?

It's much less common now due to effective antibiotics and antitubercular drugs, and is generally reserved for specific chronic infections that haven't responded to other treatments.

Will removing rib segments affect my breathing long-term?

There is some change in chest wall shape and mechanics, but most patients adapt reasonably well, and the procedure is aimed at resolving a more serious ongoing infection.

How long is the recovery?

Recovery typically takes 4-8 weeks, with a hospital stay of 5-10 days given the complexity of the chest wall surgery.

Are there alternatives to thoracoplasty?

Depending on the case, options like prolonged antibiotic therapy, drainage procedures, or muscle flap surgery alone may be tried first — a thoracic surgeon can advise on your specific situation.

What causes the chest cavity to need this surgery?

It's usually the result of long-standing tuberculosis or chronic pleural infection that has left a persistent, non-healing cavity in the lung or chest wall.
