Why Bariatric Surgery Is Needed

Recommended for patients with severe obesity, typically BMI over 40, or over 35 with obesity-related conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea, who haven't achieved lasting weight loss through diet, exercise, and medication. It addresses both excess weight and its associated metabolic complications by physically altering the digestive system.

Signs You May Need Bariatric Surgery

Candidates typically struggle with significant, persistent excess weight along with related health problems such as poorly controlled diabetes, high blood pressure, joint pain from excess load, or obstructive sleep apnea. Repeated unsuccessful attempts at weight loss through non-surgical means is a key factor doctors consider before recommending surgery.

Types of Bariatric Surgery

Common procedures include gastric bypass, which reroutes the digestive tract to reduce food intake and absorption, sleeve gastrectomy, which removes a large portion of the stomach, and gastric banding, which places an adjustable band around the upper stomach, most performed laparoscopically. The choice depends on the patient's BMI, existing health conditions, and surgeon recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much weight can I expect to lose?

Most patients lose 50-70% of their excess body weight within the first 1-2 years, though results vary with procedure type and lifestyle changes.

Is bariatric surgery reversible?

Gastric banding is reversible, while sleeve gastrectomy is not; gastric bypass is technically reversible but rarely undone in practice.

Will I need to take supplements for life?

Yes, most patients need lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation since the surgery affects nutrient absorption.

What are the risks of bariatric surgery?

Risks include nutritional deficiencies, gallstones, and rarely leaks or strictures at the surgical site, so careful follow-up with your surgical team is important.

Can the weight come back after surgery?

Some weight regain is possible over years without sustained lifestyle changes, so long-term diet and exercise commitment remains essential after surgery.
