Why Cochlear Implant Is Needed

Recommended for children or adults with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss who get little or no benefit from hearing aids, most often due to damage to the tiny hair cells in the cochlea from genetic causes, infections, aging, or noise exposure. It's used to restore functional hearing by directly stimulating the auditory nerve, bypassing the damaged part of the inner ear.

Signs You May Need Cochlear Implant

Severe difficulty understanding speech even with well-fitted hearing aids, needing very high volume for any sound perception, or, in infants, failing newborn hearing screening and showing no response to loud sounds are the main indications. Older children or adults may notice progressively worsening hearing that hearing aids no longer adequately compensate for.

Types of Cochlear Implant

A standard single cochlear implant is placed in one ear, while bilateral cochlear implants are increasingly used, especially in young children, to improve sound localization and hearing in noisy environments. Some patients with residual low-frequency hearing may be candidates for a hybrid electro-acoustic implant that combines electrical stimulation with amplified natural hearing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a cochlear implant restore normal hearing?

It provides useful, functional hearing rather than normal hearing, and most recipients, especially children implanted early, develop good speech understanding with consistent use and therapy.

Is the surgery risky?

It's a well-established procedure with a good safety record, though as with any surgery there are risks like infection, device failure, or changes in taste or facial sensation, which your ENT surgeon will discuss.

How soon after surgery is the implant activated?

The device is typically activated 2-4 weeks after surgery, once swelling has settled, followed by a period of programming and auditory training.

Will my child need speech therapy after implantation?

Yes, speech and auditory-verbal therapy are essential after implantation to help the brain learn to interpret the new sound signals effectively.

At what age can a child get a cochlear implant?

Implantation can be done as early as around 9-12 months of age for profound hearing loss, since earlier implantation generally leads to better speech and language outcomes.
