Why Aneurysm Surgery Is Needed

Performed to repair a weakened, bulging section of an artery wall before it ruptures, most often affecting the aorta or brain vessels, caused by atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, genetic connective tissue disorders, or trauma. Surgery is generally recommended once the aneurysm reaches a size threshold associated with high rupture risk, or if it's already leaking or symptomatic.

Signs You May Need Aneurysm Surgery

Many aneurysms are silent until large, but warning signs include a pulsating lump in the abdomen, deep back or abdominal pain, sudden severe headache for brain aneurysms, or chest and back pain for thoracic aneurysms. A ruptured aneurysm causes sudden severe pain, dizziness, and shock, which is a medical emergency.

Types of Aneurysm Surgery

Open surgical repair involves replacing the weakened vessel segment with a graft through a direct incision, while endovascular repair uses a catheter-delivered stent-graft through small groin incisions for less invasive treatment. The choice depends on aneurysm location, size, shape, and the patient's overall fitness for open surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is aneurysm surgery an emergency?

It can be, if the aneurysm has ruptured or is leaking; unruptured aneurysms found on a scan are often scheduled electively based on size and risk.

What's the difference between open and endovascular repair?

Open repair is more invasive with a longer recovery but has a long track record, while endovascular repair is less invasive with faster recovery but may need more frequent follow-up imaging.

What happens if an aneurysm ruptures?

A ruptured aneurysm is a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate surgery, with significantly higher risk than planned, elective repair.

How is a small aneurysm managed if surgery isn't needed yet?

Small aneurysms below the risk threshold are usually monitored with regular imaging and blood pressure control rather than immediate surgery.

What is the long-term outlook after repair?

Most patients do well long-term after successful repair, though ongoing monitoring and cardiovascular risk-factor control remain important.
