Colposcopy in Aswalu, Mysuru, Karnataka

What is Colposcopy?

Close examination of the cervix, vagina, and vulva for signs of disease using a colposcope

Why Colposcopy Is Needed

Performed to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva when a Pap smear or HPV test shows abnormal results, or when a doctor notices a suspicious area during a routine pelvic exam, in order to identify precancerous or cancerous changes that need further evaluation or biopsy. It's a diagnostic step rather than a treatment itself, guiding decisions about whether further intervention like a biopsy or LEEP is needed.

Signs You May Need Colposcopy

Colposcopy is usually prompted by an abnormal screening test result rather than symptoms noticed by the patient, though some women having the procedure may also report abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge that warrants the closer examination. Most cervical changes detected this way cause no symptoms at all in their early stages.

Types of Colposcopy

Standard colposcopy uses a magnifying instrument with a light to examine the cervix after applying a vinegar or iodine solution that highlights abnormal areas, and can be combined with a directed biopsy if suspicious areas are seen. It's typically an outpatient office procedure requiring no anesthesia, distinguishing it from more invasive diagnostic or treatment procedures like conization.
