Performed to divert stool through an opening in the abdomen when normal passage through the colon or rectum is disrupted, most commonly due to colorectal cancer, severe diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, traumatic bowel injury, or to protect a lower bowel reconnection while it heals. It can be temporary, to allow healing, or permanent, depending on the underlying condition and whether normal bowel function can later be restored.

Signs You May Need Colostomy

The need for colostomy usually arises from an underlying bowel condition with symptoms like severe abdominal pain, bowel obstruction, rectal bleeding, or perforation with signs of infection. Sometimes it's a planned, protective step during surgery for cancer or severe inflammatory disease rather than a response to a new symptom.

Types of Colostomy

A temporary colostomy is created to divert stool while an area of bowel heals, with plans for later reversal surgery once healing is complete, while a permanent colostomy is used when normal bowel continuity can't be restored, such as after removal of the rectum. The stoma's location depends on which part of the bowel is affected and where diversion is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my colostomy be permanent or temporary?

This depends on the underlying condition; many colostomies created to protect a healing bowel reconnection are reversed within a few months, while those needed after extensive bowel or rectal removal are often permanent.

How do I manage a colostomy day-to-day?

Stoma care nurses provide detailed training on colostomy bag changes, skin care, and diet adjustments, and most people adapt well to managing their stoma independently over time.

Can I still lead a normal, active life with a colostomy?

Yes, most people return to work, travel, exercise, and social activities with proper stoma management and support.

What are common complications with a colostomy?

Skin irritation around the stoma, hernias near the stoma site, and blockages are the more common issues, which a stoma care team can help prevent and manage.

If temporary, when is colostomy reversal usually done?

Reversal is typically planned a few months after the initial surgery, once the bowel has fully healed and any additional treatment like chemotherapy is complete.
