Laryngectomy in Karnataka

Will I be able to speak after laryngectomy?

You will lose your natural voice after total laryngectomy, but most patients learn to speak again using a voice prosthesis, electrolarynx device, or esophageal speech with guidance from a speech-language pathologist.

How will I breathe after this surgery?

You will breathe through a permanent opening in your neck called a stoma rather than through your nose and mouth, which requires learning new care routines that your surgical team will teach you.

Can laryngeal cancer be treated without removing the entire larynx?

Early-stage cancers are often treated successfully with radiation or partial laryngectomy that preserves voice function, so a full laryngectomy is generally reserved for more advanced or recurrent disease.

How long is recovery after laryngectomy?

Hospital stay is typically ten to fourteen days with full recovery taking six to eight weeks, plus ongoing rehabilitation for speech, swallowing, and stoma care.

Will I still be able to eat normally?

Most patients return to eating by mouth after healing, though swallowing therapy may be needed initially, and your surgical team will guide you through a gradual return to a normal diet.
