Why Renal Artery Repair Is Needed

This surgery is done for renal artery stenosis, a narrowing usually caused by atherosclerosis (plaque buildup) or fibromuscular dysplasia, which restricts blood flow to the kidney and raises blood pressure. It may also be needed for renal artery aneurysms or after trauma that damages the artery, both of which threaten kidney function if untreated.

Signs You May Need Renal Artery Repair

Warning signs include difficult-to-control high blood pressure despite multiple medications, declining kidney function, sudden flank pain, and in some cases fluid retention or swelling from reduced kidney filtering. A whooshing sound (bruit) heard over the abdomen during a checkup can also point to renal artery narrowing.

Types of Renal Artery Repair

Surgical options include open renal artery bypass using a graft, aortorenal bypass, and endarterectomy to clear plaque directly from the artery wall. In many cases, a less invasive angioplasty with stent placement is tried first, with open surgical repair reserved for cases where stenting isn't suitable or has failed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is angioplasty an alternative to surgery?

Yes, many patients are treated first with balloon angioplasty and a stent, and open repair is reserved for more complex blockages or when stenting fails; a vascular surgeon can assess which is right for you.

Will my blood pressure normalize after surgery?

Many patients see significant improvement in blood pressure control, though some may still need medication; results depend on how long the narrowing was present before treatment.

What are the risks of renal artery repair?

Risks include bleeding, kidney injury, blood clots, and general anesthesia risks; your surgical team will monitor kidney function closely before and after the procedure.

How long is the hospital stay?

Most patients stay around 5-7 days depending on whether the repair is open or minimally invasive.

Can both kidneys be affected?

Yes, renal artery stenosis can be one-sided or bilateral, and treatment strategy depends on which kidney or kidneys are affected — discuss imaging results with your specialist.
