Why Pterygium Surgery Is Needed

Pterygium surgery removes a wing-shaped growth of tissue on the white of the eye (conjunctiva) that extends onto the cornea, typically caused by prolonged exposure to UV light, wind, dust, and dry conditions, common in people who spend a lot of time outdoors. Surgery is recommended when the growth causes irritation, redness, or begins to encroach on the cornea enough to threaten vision.

Signs You May Need Pterygium Surgery

Common symptoms include a visible pink or fleshy growth on the eye's surface, redness, a persistent feeling of grittiness or a foreign body in the eye, and mild blurring of vision if the growth extends over the cornea. Progressive growth toward the center of the eye, causing astigmatism or significant visual disturbance, is a key indicator that surgical removal is warranted.

Types of Pterygium Surgery

Simple excision removes the pterygium tissue alone but carries a higher chance of recurrence. Excision with conjunctival autografting, the preferred modern technique, transplants a small piece of healthy conjunctival tissue from elsewhere in the eye to cover the area after removal, significantly reducing recurrence, and in some cases tissue glue is used instead of sutures to attach the graft for a more comfortable recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a pterygium come back after surgery?

Yes, recurrence is possible, especially with simple excision alone, which is why conjunctival autografting is generally preferred as it substantially lowers the chance of the growth returning.

Is pterygium surgery painful?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is not painful during surgery, though some irritation, redness, and mild discomfort in the first week of healing is normal and manageable with prescribed drops.

How long is recovery after pterygium removal?

Most people return to normal activities within one to two weeks, though full healing of the eye's surface and stabilization of vision can take up to four weeks.

Can pterygiums be prevented?

Wearing UV-protective sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat outdoors, especially in sunny, dusty, or windy environments, can help reduce the risk of developing or worsening a pterygium.

Do all pterygiums need surgery?

No, small, stable pterygiums that are not causing symptoms or affecting vision can simply be monitored, with surgery reserved for growths that are enlarging, irritating, or threatening the cornea.
