Colectomy in Devikere, Davangere, Karnataka

What is Colectomy?

Surgical removal of part or all of the large intestine (colon) for colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, or inflammatory bowel disease

Why Colectomy Is Needed

Performed to remove part or all of the large intestine, most commonly for colorectal cancer, but also for severe inflammatory bowel disease that hasn't responded to medical treatment, complicated diverticulitis, or bowel obstruction. The extent of colon removed depends on the location and extent of disease.

Signs You May Need Colectomy

Persistent changes in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, and anemia are common warning signs for colorectal cancer, while inflammatory bowel disease may present with chronic diarrhea, bloody stools, and abdominal cramping that doesn't respond to medication. Bowel obstruction symptoms like severe bloating, vomiting, and inability to pass stool or gas can indicate a more urgent need for surgery.

Types of Colectomy

Partial colectomy removes only the diseased section of colon, while total colectomy removes the entire colon, sometimes with the rectum as well for extensive disease like ulcerative colitis. Laparoscopic or robotic-assisted colectomy, using small incisions, is now commonly preferred over open surgery when feasible, offering a faster recovery.
