Why Retinal Detachment Surgery Is Needed

Retinal detachment surgery is performed when the retina separates from the underlying tissue, most often due to a retinal tear that lets fluid seep underneath, high myopia, previous eye trauma, or advanced diabetic eye disease. Aging-related shrinkage of the vitreous gel is one of the most common triggers.

Signs You May Need Retinal Detachment Surgery

Classic warning signs include a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light in the peripheral vision, and a shadow or curtain-like blockage spreading across the field of vision. Any sudden vision loss or these symptoms together should be treated as an eye emergency.

Types of Retinal Detachment Surgery

Techniques include pneumatic retinopexy, where a gas bubble is injected to push the retina back into place, scleral buckling, which places a silicone band around the eye to relieve traction, and vitrectomy, which removes the vitreous gel and repairs the retina directly, often combined with a gas or oil bubble to hold it in position.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this really an emergency?

Yes, retinal detachment can cause permanent vision loss if not treated within days, so any sudden flashes, floaters, or a shadow in your vision needs immediate evaluation by an ophthalmologist.

Will my vision fully recover?

Vision often improves significantly, especially if the detachment is repaired before the central retina (macula) is affected, but some patients have residual blurring; earlier treatment gives the best outcome.

Do I need to keep a certain head position afterward?

If a gas bubble is used, you may need to maintain a specific head position for several days to keep the bubble pressed against the retina — your surgeon will give exact instructions.

Can I fly after this surgery?

No, air travel should be avoided while a gas bubble is in the eye because pressure changes can cause dangerous expansion; ask your surgeon when it's safe to fly again.

Will I need more than one surgery?

Most detachments are fixed in one procedure, but complex or recurrent detachments sometimes need a second surgery.
