Pneumonectomy in Block E, Roop Nagar, Delhi

Can a person live normally with only one lung?

Yes, many people adapt well to having one lung, though exercise tolerance may be somewhat reduced, and your medical team will guide breathing exercises and activity pacing to maximize your remaining lung function.

Why would a whole lung need to be removed instead of just part of it?

This is typically necessary when the tumor is centrally located near the lung's main airway or blood vessels, or when the entire lung is severely damaged by disease, making a smaller resection insufficient.

How long is the recovery after pneumonectomy?

Hospital stay is typically seven to fourteen days, with full recovery taking six to twelve weeks, and pulmonary rehabilitation is often recommended to help you regain strength and stamina.

What are the main risks of pneumonectomy?

As a major surgery, risks include heart strain, fluid buildup in the remaining chest cavity, infection, and breathing difficulties, which is why careful pre-operative assessment of heart and lung function is essential.

Will I need additional cancer treatment after pneumonectomy?

Depending on the cancer stage and pathology results, your oncology team may recommend chemotherapy or other treatments afterward to address any remaining microscopic disease.
