Why Spinal Disc Surgery (Discectomy) Is Needed

Discectomy is performed when a herniated or bulging intervertebral disc presses on a spinal nerve root, most often from age-related disc degeneration, heavy lifting, or repetitive strain, causing pain that radiates down the arm or leg. It's typically considered after 6-12 weeks of failed conservative treatment like physiotherapy, medication, or epidural injections.

Signs You May Need Spinal Disc Surgery (Discectomy)

Symptoms include sciatica-like pain shooting down the leg or arm, numbness or tingling in the affected limb, muscle weakness, and in severe cases, loss of bladder or bowel control (cauda equina syndrome), which is a surgical emergency.

Types of Spinal Disc Surgery (Discectomy)

The standard modern approach is microdiscectomy, a minimally invasive technique using a small incision and microscope to remove the herniated portion, while endoscopic discectomy uses an even smaller, tube-based approach for select cases; traditional open discectomy is reserved for more complex or multi-level herniations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all herniated discs need surgery?

No, most improve with rest, physiotherapy, and medication within a few weeks; surgery is usually reserved for persistent pain, significant weakness, or nerve compression that isn't improving.

How quickly will the leg or arm pain go away?

Many patients feel significant relief within days to weeks after discectomy, though numbness or weakness may take longer to resolve fully.

How long is the recovery?

Recovery is relatively quick for minimally invasive discectomy, with many patients returning to light activity within 2-4 weeks and full recovery by 4-8 weeks.

Can the disc herniate again?

There is a small risk of recurrent herniation at the same level, so maintaining good posture, core strength, and safe lifting techniques afterward is important.

Is this a major surgery?

Modern microdiscectomy is far less invasive than older open techniques, often done through a small incision with a short hospital stay.
