Why Squint (Strabismus) Surgery Is Needed

Strabismus surgery is performed when the eye muscles are imbalanced, causing the eyes to misalign — from congenital muscle or nerve development issues, uncorrected refractive errors, nerve palsies, or as a result of conditions like thyroid eye disease. In children, it's also done to prevent amblyopia (lazy eye) from developing due to the misalignment.

Signs You May Need Squint (Strabismus) Surgery

Warning signs include one or both eyes visibly turning inward, outward, up, or down, double vision, squinting or tilting the head to compensate for the misalignment, and in children, a preference for using one eye over the other.

Types of Squint (Strabismus) Surgery

Techniques include recession, which weakens an overactive eye muscle by repositioning it further back, and resection, which strengthens a weak muscle by shortening it; adjustable suture techniques allow fine-tuning of eye alignment in the days after surgery for more precise results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is squint surgery only for children?

No, adults can also have strabismus surgery for cosmetic or double-vision issues, though outcomes and reasons for surgery can differ from childhood cases.

Will one surgery fully correct the misalignment?

Many patients achieve good alignment with one surgery, but some, especially with complex or longstanding misalignment, may need a second procedure for fine-tuning.

Does the surgery improve vision itself?

Squint surgery corrects eye alignment and appearance; if amblyopia (lazy eye) is also present, that requires separate treatment like patching or glasses.

Is recovery quick?

Yes, most patients resume normal activities within a week, with some redness and mild discomfort in the eye for a few days.

What are the risks?

Risks include overcorrection or undercorrection of the alignment, infection, and rarely double vision, all of which an experienced ophthalmic surgeon works to minimize.
