About Unani and Siddha medicine
Unani medicine, with roots in Greek and Arabic traditions, and Siddha medicine, a traditional system from Tamil Nadu, are recognised AYUSH systems in India. Unani practitioners hold a BUMS degree (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery) and Siddha practitioners a BSMS (Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery); postgraduate specialists hold an MD. Practice is regulated by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) and state councils.
Approach
Both systems consider a person's constitution, diet, environment and lifestyle, and use herbal, mineral and animal-derived medicines along with regimental therapies such as cupping (hijama) and massage in Unani, and varmam and herbal therapies in Siddha. Treatment is often long-term and personalised.
Common reasons for consultation
- Joint and muscle pain, arthritis symptoms and back pain.
- Skin conditions, digestive complaints and respiratory allergies.
- Menstrual and general women's health concerns.
- Chronic complaints and general wellness advice.
Safety and good practice
- Consult only a registered practitioner and buy medicines from licensed manufacturers; some traditional preparations have been found to contain heavy metals such as lead, mercury or arsenic.
- Never stop or replace prescribed medicines for diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disease, epilepsy or heart disease without medical advice.
- Herbal products can affect the liver and kidneys and interact with other medicines; liver and kidney function tests may be advised during long-term use.
- Be cautious of claims of guaranteed cures for serious illness, and seek modern care for emergencies.
Fees and choosing
Consultation fees commonly range from about ₹300 to ₹1,000 and may vary. Check qualification and registration, ask for a clear plan and expected duration and tell all your doctors about every treatment you use. Compare registered practitioners and book on Lab Dekho.
