What a physiotherapist does
A physiotherapist helps restore movement, strength and function after injury, surgery or illness, and helps prevent future problems. Qualification is a BPT (Bachelor of Physiotherapy), and specialists hold an MPT in areas such as orthopaedics, neurology, cardiorespiratory or sports. Physiotherapists use exercise, manual therapy, electrotherapy, education and sometimes devices, rather than medicines.
Common conditions
- Back and neck pain, sciatica and slipped disc rehabilitation.
- Knee and hip pain, arthritis and rehabilitation after joint replacement.
- Shoulder problems, frozen shoulder and tennis elbow.
- Sports injuries, ligament and fracture recovery.
- Stroke, spinal injury, Parkinson's disease and balance problems.
- Breathing exercises for lung disease and after heart surgery.
- Pregnancy and postnatal care, pelvic floor problems and paediatric conditions such as cerebral palsy.
What to expect
The first visit includes an assessment of your pain, movement and function, with a plan of treatment goals. Sessions typically last 30 to 60 minutes, and the number depends on the condition, from a few for a simple sprain to many weeks for stroke or post-surgical rehabilitation. Home exercises are a key part of recovery; doing them regularly matters more than the number of clinic visits.
When to see a doctor first
Get a medical assessment first for severe pain after injury, back pain with leg weakness or loss of bladder control, fever, unexplained weight loss or chest pain. Tests such as vitamin D, calcium and uric acid and imaging may be advised to identify causes.
Fees and choosing
Session fees commonly range from about ₹400 to ₹1,500 and may vary, and home visits cost more. Check qualifications and registration, ask for a clear plan and review progress regularly. Be cautious of long fixed packages without reassessment. Compare physiotherapists and book on Lab Dekho.
