What a pediatric surgeon does
A paediatric surgeon operates on babies, children and adolescents, from the newborn period to teenage years. Training is an MS in General Surgery followed by an MCh or DNB in Paediatric Surgery. Children have different anatomy, anaesthesia needs and healing, so specialised teams, equipment and child-friendly facilities matter.
Common conditions treated
- Inguinal hernia and hydrocele, and umbilical hernia.
- Undescended testis (best treated between 6 and 18 months of age).
- Appendicitis and other abdominal emergencies.
- Phimosis and circumcision, and urinary tract problems.
- Birth defects such as cleft lip, anal atresia, oesophageal atresia and diaphragmatic hernia.
- Pyloric stenosis in infants, intussusception, swallowed objects, and tumours in children.
- Lumps, cysts and soft-tissue problems.
Emergency signs in a child: severe or persistent abdominal pain with vomiting, bloated tight belly, blood in stool, a hard painful groin swelling, a swallowed battery or magnet, or a baby with green (bilious) vomiting.
Preparing for surgery
Tests commonly include CBC, blood group and clotting tests and, for some conditions, ultrasound. Fasting instructions before anaesthesia are strict and depend on age. Explain the procedure to older children in simple terms, and bring a favourite toy or comfort item.
Safety and recovery
Modern paediatric anaesthesia is safe in specialist hands. Many procedures are day-care, and laparoscopic techniques reduce pain and scarring. Follow wound care and activity instructions and attend follow-up visits.
Fees and choosing
Consultation fees commonly range from about ₹600 to ₹1,800 and may vary; surgery costs vary widely by procedure and hospital. Choose an MCh/DNB paediatric surgeon with a paediatric anaesthetist and, for newborns and complex cases, a hospital with NICU/PICU. Compare paediatric surgeons and book on Lab Dekho.
