What palliative care is
Palliative care is specialised medical care for people living with serious illness, such as cancer, heart failure, advanced kidney or lung disease and neurological conditions. Its goal is to relieve pain and other symptoms and to support patients and families, at any stage of illness and alongside curative treatment. Palliative physicians typically train as doctors with a fellowship, diploma or MD in Palliative Medicine.
Who can benefit
- Patients with cancer or other serious illness who have pain, breathlessness, nausea, tiredness or poor appetite.
- Those with anxiety, low mood or distress about illness.
- Families who need help with decisions, planning and caregiving.
- People nearing the end of life who want comfort and dignity.
What palliative care provides
Treatment of pain and symptoms using medicines including morphine when appropriate, nursing and home care, emotional and spiritual support, help with difficult conversations and decisions, and support for caregivers. Palliative care is not only for the last days of life, and it does not mean giving up: studies show earlier palliative care can improve quality of life.
Pain relief in India
Many patients in India do not receive adequate pain relief because of fear and limited access. Oral morphine is available through licensed channels in many states, and palliative services, including home-based and community programmes, are expanding. Ask your oncologist or hospital about referral.
Tests and costs
Few tests are needed; blood tests such as CBC, kidney and liver function and calcium may be used to guide symptom control. Consultation fees commonly range from about ₹500 to ₹1,500 and may vary; many NGOs and government cancer centres provide palliative care at low or no cost.
