The retina is the light-sensing layer at the back of the eye. Diabetes is a leading cause of retinal damage in India, so every person with diabetes needs a dilated retinal examination at least once a year.

Flashes, a shower of new floaters or a curtain over vision can mean retinal detachment, which needs treatment within a day or two. Laser, injections and surgery can preserve sight when treated in time.
