What an occupational therapist does
An occupational therapist (OT) helps people take part in everyday activities, such as dressing, eating, writing, working and playing, when illness, injury, disability or developmental difficulties make them hard. Qualification is a BOT (Bachelor of Occupational Therapy), and specialists hold an MOT. OTs look at the person, the task and the environment, and then adapt one or more of them.
Who benefits
- Children with developmental delay, autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy or handwriting and coordination difficulties; sensory integration therapy is a common focus.
- Stroke and brain injury patients relearning daily skills.
- Hand and upper-limb injuries, fractures, burns and nerve injuries, with splinting and exercises.
- Older adults with arthritis, dementia or falls, and home safety assessments.
- Mental health conditions, to rebuild routines and work skills.
- People with amputations, who need prosthesis training.
What sessions involve
After an assessment, the therapist sets goals and uses purposeful activities, exercises, splints, adaptive equipment and advice on changing the home or workplace. Parents and caregivers are taught techniques to continue at home, which is key to progress. Progress is reviewed regularly.
Working with doctors
A doctor's assessment helps find medical causes; tests such as a CBC, thyroid profile, vitamin D and B12 may be advised for children with developmental concerns or adults with fatigue. OT works alongside physiotherapy and speech therapy.
Fees and choosing
Session fees commonly range from about ₹400 to ₹1,500 and may vary; check qualification and registration with the relevant council, experience with your need and a clear plan with measurable goals. Compare therapists and book on Lab Dekho.
