About Bone Marrow Transplant
Bone marrow (stem cell) transplantation replaces diseased marrow with healthy stem cells, from the patient or a donor, to treat blood cancers and some inherited blood disorders such as thalassaemia.
It is a complex treatment done at specialised centres. Matching donors, infection prevention and long-term follow-up are crucial. Siblings and, increasingly, half-matched family donors may be used.
