What a geriatrician does

A geriatrician is a doctor who specialises in the health of older adults, usually people over 65. Training is an MD in Medicine followed by additional qualification (such as a DM or fellowship) in Geriatric Medicine. Older people often have several conditions at once, take many medicines and have problems that are not simply "old age", so a whole-person approach matters.

When to see a geriatrician

• Several chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and kidney disease.
• Repeated falls, dizziness, weakness or difficulty walking.
• Memory loss, confusion, behaviour change or suspected dementia.
• Taking five or more medicines, or side effects from medicines.
• Poor appetite, weight loss, incontinence or sleep problems.
• Low mood, loneliness or difficulty coping after bereavement or illness.
• Planning care after hospital discharge or surgery.

Comprehensive geriatric assessment

The assessment looks at medical problems, medicines, mobility and balance, vision and hearing, memory and mood, nutrition, continence, home safety and caregiver support. The result is a single care plan that aims to preserve independence and quality of life, not just treat individual diseases.

Common areas of care

Medicine review to remove unnecessary or risky drugs, fall prevention, osteoporosis care, dementia diagnosis and support, vaccination (influenza, pneumococcal, shingles), screening, nutrition and rehabilitation. Blood tests such as CBC, kidney and liver function, B12, vitamin D, thyroid, sugar and electrolytes are commonly reviewed; a senior health package can cover many of them.
