What a clinical psychologist does
A clinical psychologist assesses and treats mental health problems using psychological methods rather than medicines. Qualification is an MA/MSc in Psychology followed by an M.Phil in Clinical Psychology recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), and often a PhD. They provide therapy, psychological testing and counselling for individuals, couples, families and children.
Psychologist versus psychiatrist
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medicines; a clinical psychologist provides talk therapy and testing but does not prescribe. For moderate to severe depression, bipolar disorder or psychosis, both often work together. Mild to moderate anxiety, stress and relationship concerns often respond well to therapy alone.
When to seek therapy
- Persistent low mood, worry, panic or fear that interferes with life.
- Stress, burnout, grief, trauma or relationship difficulties.
- Obsessive thoughts, phobias, or anger problems.
- Children with learning, attention, behaviour or emotional difficulties.
- Substance use, eating concerns or adjustment to illness.
- Psychological assessment for learning disability, IQ or career guidance.
If you have thoughts of harming yourself, call 112 or Tele-MANAS (14416) and seek help right away.
Types of therapy
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy, exposure therapy, family therapy, play therapy for children and mindfulness-based approaches have good evidence for common conditions. Sessions are typically weekly for 45–60 minutes over several weeks to months, and are confidential.
Fees and choosing
Session fees commonly range from about ₹500 to ₹2,500 and may vary; online therapy is widely available. Check RCI registration, experience in your concern and how comfortable you feel. If symptoms persist, a doctor may check thyroid, B12 and vitamin D levels to rule out physical contributors. Compare psychologists and book on Lab Dekho.
