About Pediatric Cardiology
Paediatric cardiology looks after heart conditions in babies, children and teenagers, most of them present from birth. About 1 in 100 babies is born with a heart defect, and many can be repaired or managed very well when found early.
Warning signs in a baby include difficulty feeding, sweating while feeding, bluish lips or rapid breathing. A paediatric cardiologist uses echocardiography, treats some defects with catheter devices and works with paediatric heart surgeons for others. Rheumatic heart disease, which follows untreated sore throats, remains a concern in India.
