About Electrophysiology
Electrophysiology deals with the electrical system of the heart, which controls the rate and rhythm of every heartbeat. When this system misfires, the heart may beat too fast, too slow or irregularly, causing palpitations, dizziness or fainting.
An electrophysiologist maps the abnormal circuit with an electrophysiology study and can often cure it with catheter ablation. Slow rhythms are treated with pacemakers, and people at risk of dangerous rhythms may receive an implantable defibrillator. Diagnosis often starts with an ECG, Holter or event monitor.
