About Echocardiography
Echocardiography uses ultrasound to create moving pictures of the heart, showing its size, pumping strength, valves and the blood flow through them. It is painless, involves no radiation and is often the first test after an ECG when a heart problem is suspected.
An echocardiography specialist reports how well the heart contracts (the ejection fraction), checks for leaking or narrowed valves, fluid around the heart and structural defects, and tracks changes over time. Stress echo and transoesophageal echo give additional information in selected patients.
