What audiologists and speech-language pathologists do
An audiologist tests hearing and balance and fits hearing aids; a speech-language pathologist (speech therapist) treats problems with speech, language, voice, fluency and swallowing. Qualification is BASLP (Bachelor in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology) and an MASLP for specialists, registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI).
When to see an audiologist
- Difficulty hearing, asking people to repeat, turning the television up loud.
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) or a feeling of blocked ears.
- Dizziness or balance problems.
- Newborn hearing screening and children who do not respond to sound.
- Noise exposure at work, and adults over 60 for routine screening.
- Hearing aid or cochlear implant evaluation and follow-up.
Sudden hearing loss is an emergency; see an ENT specialist the same day.
When to see a speech therapist
- A child who is not babbling by about 12 months, has few words by 18–24 months or is hard to understand at 3 years.
- Stammering (stuttering), unclear speech or voice problems such as hoarseness.
- Speech or swallowing difficulty after stroke or brain injury.
- Language difficulties with autism, learning disability or hearing loss.
Tests and treatment
Hearing evaluation uses pure-tone audiometry, tympanometry, OAE and BERA for babies. Treatment includes hearing aids, cochlear implants, listening training, speech and language therapy, voice therapy and counselling. Early intervention gives children the best outcomes. Medical evaluation by an ENT doctor and tests such as thyroid profile and CBC may help find causes.
Fees and choosing
Assessment fees commonly range from about ₹500 to ₹1,500, and hearing aid prices vary widely by technology, so compare and ask for trial periods. Check RCI registration. Compare specialists and book on Lab Dekho.
