What an andrologist does
An andrologist is a doctor who specialises in male reproductive and sexual health. Andrology is usually practised by urologists, endocrinologists or physicians with additional training, and sexual medicine by doctors trained in sexual health. Many men delay seeking help because of embarrassment, but most male sexual and fertility problems are common and treatable, and they may signal other health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease.
Common reasons to consult
- Erectile dysfunction (difficulty getting or keeping an erection).
- Premature or delayed ejaculation, low sexual desire.
- Male infertility: low sperm count, poor motility, or no sperm.
- Low testosterone: fatigue, low desire, reduced muscle and mood changes.
- Varicocele, testicular pain, undescended testis or curvature of the penis.
- Questions about contraception, vasectomy and sexual health in diabetes or after surgery.
Evaluation
The doctor takes a confidential history and examines you. Tests can include semen analysis, testosterone, free testosterone, LH, FSH, prolactin, blood sugar, HbA1c, lipid profile and thyroid profile, and a scrotal Doppler ultrasound. Erectile dysfunction is often a warning sign of heart disease, so cardiovascular risk is checked.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause: lifestyle change (weight loss, exercise, stopping tobacco and limiting alcohol), counselling, medicines, hormone treatment when indeed deficient, varicocele surgery, assisted reproduction (IUI/IVF/ICSI) and other options. Be wary of unregulated "sex clinics", herbal products or injections that promise instant results; they can be unsafe.
Privacy, fees and choosing
Consultations are confidential. Fees commonly range from about ₹500 to ₹2,000 and may vary. Choose a qualified urologist, endocrinologist or sexual-medicine doctor, and consider an online consultation for privacy. Compare specialists and book on Lab Dekho.
