What is the difference between an allergist and a dermatologist for skin allergies?

An allergist identifies the underlying trigger (food, environment, drug) causing the reaction and can offer immunotherapy, while a dermatologist focuses on treating the skin symptoms directly.

How does allergy testing work?

The most common method is skin prick testing, where tiny amounts of allergens are placed on the skin to check for a reaction. Blood tests measuring specific IgE antibodies are used when skin testing isn't suitable.

Can allergies be cured permanently?

Allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots or tablets) can significantly reduce or eliminate allergic reactions over 3-5 years of treatment, offering long-term relief for many patients.

When should I see an allergist instead of just taking antihistamines?

If over-the-counter antihistamines aren't controlling your symptoms, you're taking them almost daily for months, or you've had a severe reaction, it's time to see an allergist — they'll identify the actual trigger instead of just masking symptoms.

Is allergy testing safe for children?

Yes. Skin prick testing and blood-based IgE testing are both routinely and safely performed on children, including infants, under the supervision of a pediatric allergist.

What should I do if I think I'm having a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)?

Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency — use an epinephrine auto-injector if prescribed and call emergency services immediately. Don't wait to see if symptoms improve on their own.

How much does an allergist consultation cost?

A first consultation with an allergist/immunologist typically costs ₹500–₹1,500 depending on the city and hospital; allergy testing and immunotherapy are usually charged separately.

Do I need a referral to see an allergist?

No referral is required in most cases — you can book a consultation with an allergist directly through Lab Dekho based on your symptoms.
