Lumbar Puncture (Spinal Tap) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

Is a lumbar puncture very painful?

The area is numbed with local anaesthesia first, so most patients feel pressure rather than sharp pain, though some discomfort during needle insertion is common.

Why do some people get a headache after this procedure?

A post-lumbar puncture headache can occur due to a small leak of spinal fluid, and it's usually managed with bed rest, fluids, and pain relief, resolving within a few days in most cases.

How much does a lumbar puncture cost in India?

The procedure itself, along with cerebrospinal fluid analysis, typically costs between Rs 3,000 and Rs 8,000 depending on the tests ordered and the hospital.

How long does it take to get results?

Basic fluid analysis results are often available within a day, though specialised tests like cultures or specific antibody panels can take several days to a couple of weeks.

Is bed rest really necessary after the procedure?

Yes, lying flat for 1 to 2 hours afterward and staying well hydrated can help reduce the risk of a post-procedure headache, so it's worth following your doctor's specific instructions.
