Colectomy is performed to treat colon cancer, remove diseased bowel affected by severe or complicated Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, or manage recurrent diverticulitis that hasn't responded to medical treatment. It may also be needed for a bowel obstruction, perforation, or precancerous polyps too large or numerous to remove endoscopically.

Signs You May Need Colectomy

Persistent changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, and abdominal pain are common warning signs that lead to a diagnosis requiring colectomy. Recurrent episodes of severe abdominal pain and fever from diverticulitis, or worsening symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease despite medication, also indicate that surgery may be necessary.

Types of Colectomy

A partial or segmental colectomy removes only the diseased portion of the colon, while a total colectomy removes the entire colon, often needed for extensive ulcerative colitis or certain hereditary cancer syndromes. The procedure can be performed laparoscopically with small incisions or through open surgery, depending on the extent of disease and any prior surgeries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need a colostomy bag after colectomy?

Not always — many patients have the remaining bowel reconnected during the same surgery, but a temporary or permanent stoma may be needed depending on the extent and location of disease; your surgeon will explain what to expect in your case.

How long is recovery after colectomy?

Recovery typically takes 4-8 weeks, with laparoscopic surgery generally allowing a faster return to normal activity than open surgery.

Is colectomy a cure for colon cancer?

For early-stage cancer confined to the colon, surgery can be curative, though your oncologist will determine if additional treatment like chemotherapy is needed based on the pathology results.

What are the risks of colectomy?

Risks include infection, bleeding, and leakage at the site where the bowel is reconnected, though the overall success rate is around 90% with modern surgical techniques.

Can I eat normally after colectomy?

Most patients gradually return to a normal diet over several weeks, though your surgical team will guide you through a step-by-step dietary progression after surgery.
