Why LASIK Eye Surgery Is Needed

LASIK is recommended for patients with stable refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), or astigmatism who want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contact lenses. It requires adequately thick, healthy corneas and stable vision for at least a year before it can be safely performed.

Signs You May Need LASIK Eye Surgery

Candidates typically experience blurred distance or near vision correctable with glasses or contacts, eye strain from constantly wearing corrective lenses, or lifestyle limitations from glasses, such as difficulty with sports or certain professions. A comprehensive eye exam confirming stable refractive error and healthy corneal thickness is required before proceeding.

Types of LASIK Eye Surgery

Standard LASIK uses a microkeratome blade or femtosecond laser to create a corneal flap before reshaping the underlying tissue with an excimer laser, while bladeless (all-laser) LASIK uses a femtosecond laser for both steps, offering greater precision. Alternative techniques like PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) and SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) are considered for patients with thinner corneas unsuitable for traditional LASIK.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LASIK surgery painful?

The procedure itself is painless due to numbing eye drops, though you may feel mild pressure during the laser application, and some grittiness or light sensitivity is common for the first day or two afterward.

How much does LASIK cost in India?

Costs typically range from Rs 25,000 to Rs 60,000 per eye depending on the technology used and the clinic, with bladeless and SMILE techniques generally costing more.

How quickly will my vision improve after LASIK?

Many patients notice significantly improved vision within 24 hours, with vision continuing to stabilise and sharpen over the following few weeks.

Are the results of LASIK permanent?

LASIK permanently reshapes the cornea, but natural age-related vision changes like presbyopia can still occur later in life, so some patients may eventually need reading glasses regardless of the surgery.

Is everyone eligible for LASIK?

No, factors like thin corneas, very high refractive errors, dry eyes, or certain eye diseases can make a patient unsuitable, which is why a thorough pre-operative evaluation with an ophthalmologist is essential before deciding.
