Craniotomy is performed to access the brain for removing tumors, clipping or repairing a ruptured brain aneurysm, draining a hematoma after traumatic brain injury, or treating certain cases of severe epilepsy. It's often the necessary surgical route when a condition inside the skull requires direct access for diagnosis or treatment.

Signs You May Need Craniotomy

Severe sudden headache described as the worst headache of one's life can indicate a ruptured aneurysm requiring emergency craniotomy, while progressive headaches, seizures, or neurological deficits like weakness or speech difficulty may indicate a tumor or bleed needing surgical evaluation. Head trauma with worsening confusion, vomiting, or loss of consciousness also warrants urgent assessment for surgery.

Types of Craniotomy

The specific craniotomy type depends on location and purpose, including pterional craniotomy for aneurysms near the base of the brain, and various keyhole or minimally invasive approaches when the lesion allows a smaller opening. Emergency decompressive craniotomy removes a larger section of skull temporarily to relieve dangerous pressure after severe trauma or stroke.
